Tutors For a Cause
Tutors For a Cause is a program that provides tutoring sessions to refugee children who recently moved to the USA to facilitate their introduction to formal education.
The Tutors For a Cause
was created by Simon Kleiner,
a CADENA volunteer in Miami
in 2021.
After the arrival of thousand of Venezuelan and Latin American Migrants that spent year or months without a formal education, Simon saw a way to help the migrants by providing tutoring online sessions.
After a long journey to cross the border, these immigrant parents find it difficult to support their children with their education, and most do not speak english.
Program #3
Tutors For
a Cause
Each tutor (high school student) is paired with a migrant child and meets twice a week on a video call to support them with homework, learning english, math, and basic studies skills so they can adjust to the American study system.
FIND STUDENTS FOR THE PROGRAM
With the help of Hermanos de la Calle, we obtained information about the migrant families that arrived in Miami. We created a database from this information. We call the students and ask them these questions:
• Name
• Telephone Number
• Age
• Grade in school
• If they have a computer
• If they have access to the internet
• Where they need most help academically
• When they arrived in the United States
• When is the best time to schedule the tutoring sessions
FIND TUTORS FOR THE PROGRAM
Through the CADENA club and volunteers in the greater Miami area, we send promotional material to enlist as many tutors as possible in our program.
For those interested, we send them a Google Form to gather information from them and match them with a student based on their personality traits. We also interview the prospective tutor to assess their ability to teach the students.
TUTOR-STUDENT MATCH
Once we have the final list of tutors and students we make the tutor-student match. To do this, we have to look at the age and the days and times that they are available to have the tutoring sessions.

Tutor (high school student)
The tutor must complete the training provided by the Regeneration team.
Each tutor is paired with a migrant child and meets twice a week on a video call to support them with homework, learning English, math, and basic studies skills so they can adjust to the American study system.
Each student is provided with a computer and receives training about the platforms that will be used in class. E.g. Google Meet. In case the student does not have internet access at home, we will take care of that.
Once we assign a student to the tutor, we send a welcome email explaining how the program works to the tutor.
The tutors are able to report the progress of the student through a monthly questionnaire.
A reminder of the tutoring sessions is sent through email and text message to both the student and tutor the day prior to the class.
- Internet Access

Tutors for a Cause is a current educational program that we’re doing in CADENA in which we provide educational help to immigrants that have chose to ramp in the US.
I’m so grateful to be part of Tutors for a Cause because I know that I'm making a difference in these kids lives, but they're also making a difference in mine.
It's been an incredible experience so far, connecting with my students on the CADENA tutoring program through the Zoom. We laugh, we learn, and we have a great time.
